Miele vacuum bags
Miele has changed its dust bag shape several times over the decades, and the shapes are not interchangeable: a bag that fits one Miele generation will not seal on another. This is the single most common mistake owners make when reordering bags for a Miele cylinder vacuum.
How to identify your Miele model
Miele prints the machine model on a silver or white label on the underside of the body, and repeats it on the rating plate behind the dust compartment flap. Read the full string, not the marketing name on the lid: a C3 Complete and an S8 can look almost identical from above and still take different bag shapes if they come from different generations.
The bag shape itself is named on the cardboard collar of the bag currently fitted, which is the fastest check of all. Pull the old bag out, hold the collar flat and read the two or three letters printed on it. Those letters, not the machine name, are what you order against.
Bag families to watch for
Miele has used several bag shapes across its history and they are not interchangeable. The five names you will see on packaging are:

Where Miele owners go wrong
- Ordering HyClean as if it were a different shape. HyClean is Miele's premium bag line, and a HyClean GN is still a GN: it is the letters that decide the fit, not the brand name in front of them.
- Assuming a newer Miele takes the older FJM shape because an older machine in the same household does. Miele changed the collar between generations and an FJM will not seal in a GN holder.
- Buying on the strength of a photograph. Bag collars photograph almost identically, and the seal is the part that fails when the shape is wrong.
When to change the bag
On a Miele the indicator strip on the control panel fills as the bag loads, but it reads airflow rather than volume, so a bag packed with fine dust can trip it while still looking half empty. Change the bag when the strip reaches the mark, or sooner if suction drops on carpet, and never try to empty and refit a paper Miele bag: the collar seal is designed to be used once.
Miele bags: common questions
Can I use a GN bag in a machine that came with FJM bags?
No. The two collars are different sizes and the GN will not latch into an FJM holder. If it appears to fit, it is sitting proud of the seal and dust will bypass the bag straight into the motor filter.
Are non-Miele bags safe in a Miele?
Third party bags exist for both common shapes and many are perfectly serviceable, but check that the collar is rigid plastic or stiffened card rather than thin cardboard, because a soft collar is what lets a bag slip under suction.
Where do I find the bag shape if the old bag is missing?
Look inside the empty bag holder: Miele moulds the shape name into the plastic on most generations, and the rating plate behind the flap gives the machine model you can match against the table above.
