Vacuum bag frequently asked questions

Can I use any bag as long as it physically fits inside the machine?

No. A bag can fit loosely inside the dust compartment without sealing correctly against the inlet. If the collar shape or width does not match your machine's holder exactly, air and dust will bypass the bag, reducing suction and letting fine dust reach the motor and filters.

Does a more expensive bag last longer?

Not always. Price differences usually reflect the number of filtration layers and whether the bag is paper or synthetic fleece, not how long it takes to fill. Fill time depends mainly on how much dust and debris you vacuum up, not the bag's price.

Can I wash and reuse a paper vacuum bag?

No. Paper vacuum bags are single use. Washing weakens the paper fibres and can tear the seal, and most paper bags are not designed to survive being wet at all. Synthetic fleece bags are also single use despite being more durable material.

What happens if I use the wrong reference and it does not quite fit?

Forcing a bag that does not seat properly can tear the collar, jam the compartment door, or leave a gap that lets dust bypass the bag entirely. If a bag does not slide in without resistance, it is very likely the wrong reference for your machine.

Are compatible, non branded bags safe to use?

Generally yes, provided they are sold against the correct reference code for your machine and your vacuum is out of warranty or its terms do not restrict non-OEM consumables. See our OEM versus compatible guide for the full comparison.

My vacuum does not use bags at all, why not?

Many current models, including most modern Vax vacuums, use bagless cyclonic technology with a clear dust canister instead of a bag. If your machine has a canister rather than a fabric bag compartment, none of the references on this site apply to it.
