How often to change a vacuum bag
Most manufacturers print a fill line on the bag itself and recommend replacing it once dust reaches that line, rather than on a fixed calendar schedule. For an average household vacuuming once or twice a week, that usually works out to roughly every four to eight weeks, but the real answer depends more on what you are picking up than on how many weeks have passed.

Signs a bag needs changing before it looks full
- Suction feels noticeably weaker than when the bag was new, even if there is visible space left inside it.
- The machine sounds like it is working harder or the motor pitch changes under load.
- Fine dust, such as flour, plaster or fine pet hair, has clogged the bag's pores from the inside even though the bag is not visually full.
- A burning or hot dust smell starts, which can indicate airflow is restricted enough to overheat the motor.
What happens if you leave it too long
A full or clogged bag restricts airflow through the whole machine, not just through the bag itself. Reduced airflow means less suction at the floor head, more strain on the motor, and in some machines a risk of the motor overheating if it runs against a near-total blockage for an extended period. On models with a HEPA or exhaust filter downstream of the bag, a bag that has started to leak fine dust around its seal can also shorten the life of that filter.
